Innovation Collective's BETTER Model in Oregon

Our partnership with the Cooperative Extension of Oregon really shines as a success story in a time when communities across the nation are seeking ways to build resiliency, economic growth, and innovation. This relationship has tapped into the local strengths of homesteading and small farming, transforming these passions and practices into modern entrepreneurial ventures.

The journey began with a deep dive into the unique strengths of the Malheur County community. Through that process, Cooperative Extension recognized that homesteading and small-scale farming were more than just hobbies or ways of life—they were rich with untapped potential for entrepreneurship.

At the heart of this initiative is our BETTER model, which is rooted in the principles of Appreciative Inquiry. This approach focuses on identifying and amplifying what works well in a community, rather than fixing what doesn't. By appreciating and building on existing strengths, the BETTER model creates a positive, forward-looking environment that fosters creativity and collaboration.

One of the first steps in this initiative was to bring together local community members  to share ideas and support one another. These gatherings have been instrumental in building a sense of community and collaboration. Participants are not only sharing their experiences and knowledge but also brainstorming new ways to monetize their skills and resources. The results of these efforts are already visible. Several projects with significant income potential have emerged from these collaborative sessions. For example, one group is putting together a Farmer’s Market Trunk event because there are no grocery stores or farmers markets in their community. It’s a hybrid farmers market and Trunk-or-Treat model.  Another initiative is around a directory, where someone will compile all of the operations, what they offer, and where to find it, so that it is easier to find customers. This is something that will also have a tech project attached to it, as it grows.

These success stories are just the beginning. As more community members engage with the process and share their ideas, the potential for new ventures continues to grow.

The collaboration between Innovation Collective and Cooperative Extension in Oregon is a testament to the power of community, the potential of Appreciative Inquiry, and the value of Cooperative Extension to the nation. By harnessing the existing strengths of homesteading and small farming, and applying the principles of the BETTER model, this initiative is sparking entrepreneurship and fostering sustainable economic growth, driven by Cooperative Extension. As more communities look for ways to innovate and thrive, the success in Oregon serves as an inspiring example of what can be achieved when people come together to build on their strengths and support one another.

The seeds of entrepreneurship have been sown, and with continued collaboration and support, a harvest of success is sure to follow (see what I did there …
